For now, there are cheap roller shades on each, and the neighbors won’t get a show. However, I have decided that I would prefer a custom option to minimize how much of the gorgeous original windows get covered. The original plans included window treatments. I also hung his favorite signed record from The Zolas. He keeps his collection in the small closet beside the chimney, but we pulled out a few and tucked them in a basket under his new bookshelf. There are only two outlets in this room, so the player on the dresser fits best along that wall. I wanted to make sure I honored his hobby by creating a place for his record player. Even though he probably won’t live in this room, I tried to keep him in mind as I considered the design plan. In a previous post, I described my son’s decorating style as minimalist + laundry and books. To keep costs low, I used items and supplies that I already had as much as possible. I bought paint, wood, a blanket, a poster, and a basket. The price tag for the whole shebang was not overwhelming. Most of the decor was brought in from other rooms in the house. It will be as if the headboard never happened. If we ever want to make a change, we can remove the headboard and fasteners, patch the holes, and touch up the mural. ![]() The mural is still hiding behind the headboard, which is hanging on two cleats. Fun fact: The floor is the same color as the darkest bottom color on the mural, and it looks completely different. I purposely left the larger mural wall void of furniture or art. I know that I caused some of you heartache when the headboard covered half of the mural on one wall, but I promise there is plenty of it left. It’s arguably one of the most interesting things I have ever made. Even so, I’m not ashamed of where I landed. Instead, I bought the platform and scrapped the floating nightstand idea. Oh, and I built a freaking headboard! The plans for the original bed included floating nightstands and a platform made from scratch. It is also closer to an outlet, so I was able to add additional lighting. The wall between the entry door and the closet is wider and more suitable for a bed and side table. The most significant functional change I made was to move the bed to the opposite wall and use the chimney wall for the modified IKEA KALLIX instead. Paint Colors: All by Sherwin-Williams (top to bottom) Accessible Beige, Balanced Beige, Moth Wing, Virtual Taupe, Smokehouse, Cast Iron, Roycroft Bronze Green If I cannot live in the real mountains, at least I have a painted version here in BHH. There were a few false starts, but it came out a winner. Next, I painted a mountain mural on two walls. We had not performed any maintenance in this room ever, and it was long overdue. ![]() While this room was in generally decent condition, Andy and I did spend some time repairing plaster cracks. Eventually, we will tear them out and find out what is lurking beneath, but that’s a project for another time. They’re still ugly, but they are not as noticeable anymore. So, I am happy to oblige.įirst, instead of tearing out the ugly ceiling tiles, I simply primed and painted them so they would recede into the background. We all know that these posts are no fun without some before shots. Feel free to click on each image to see the full-sized version. It all came together, and I am so excited. Now, are you ready to see the Cabin Vibes Bedroom? (Imagine that I’m swinging the bedroom door open dramatically. Week One | Week Two | Week Three | Week Four | Week Five He is always welcome to it, and we will use it as an overflow guest room too. That almost went very badly.įor reference, this room belongs to my oldest son, who is away at college and will likely never live at home again full-time. Extra thanks to everyone who helped me figure out how to solve my mural mistakes. ![]() It’s a minimalist bedroom with cozy cabin bedroom decor. ![]() That roughly translates to, “You didn’t ask me to paint anything horrible.” With plenty of support here, and on Instagram, this room is finished. Even Andy remarked that I didn’t seem as stressed this round. Over the past six weeks, I expected to dissolve in a puddle of stress and self-doubt over this project, but those feelings never arrived.
